Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means costume season is probably going to feel a little bigger than usual. And after a year packed with blockbuster movies, fashion moments, horror hits and characters that basically came pre-dressed for Halloween, there is no shortage of inspiration.
The official rankings for the most popular Halloween costumes of 2026 aren’t here yet, so consider this less of a definitive list and more of a read on where things are heading.
From witches and fashion editors to demon-hunting pop stars, these are the Halloween costumes we expect to see everywhere this October.
1. Nikki from Obsession
The horror hit Obsession has already started appearing in 2026 costume coverage, particularly Nikki Freeman’s party look: red-and-black animal print, black shorts, tall boots and, depending on how committed you are, some fake blood.
It’s specific enough to feel clever without requiring hours of prosthetics or a costume that arrives vacuum-sealed in a plastic bag.
And given that horror fans tend to be very good at spotting references, the people who get it will get it immediately.

2. Sally and Gillian Owens from Practical Magic 2
The Owens women are having a very good year.
Practical Magic 2 arrived in theatres in September, nearly three decades after Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman first played Sally and Gillian Owens. The sequel also introduces a new generation of the Owens family, with Joey King and Maisie Williams joining the cast.
And aesthetically? Halloween could not have asked for better timing.
Think long skirts, slip dresses, vintage knits, boots, slightly undone hair and the kind of witchy layers that look like they could have been pulled from an extremely good 1990s closet.
The best part is that you don’t really need a costume.
Add two friends, a bottle for midnight margaritas and suddenly it makes sense.
3. Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada 2
For anyone whose Halloween philosophy is less fake blood and more excellent coat, Miranda Priestly is back.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunited Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci this year, putting Runway — and its wardrobes — back into pop culture.
Miranda is also an extremely efficient costume.
You need a sharp outfit, oversized sunglasses, a white bob and an expression suggesting everyone around you has disappointed you.
Andy and Emily make obvious additions if you want to turn it into a group costume.
Best for: People who would rather buy something they can wear again November 1.
4. The Odyssey
Christopher Nolan gave Halloween a very convenient excuse to bring Greek mythology back.
The Odyssey has made warriors, gods and ancient Greek-inspired looks one of the more obvious pop-culture directions for 2026 costume season, with current costume roundups already pointing to the film as inspiration.
You can take this one seriously with armour and a dramatic cape, or interpret it much more loosely with draped fabrics, gold jewellery, leather sandals and a laurel crown.
It also works ridiculously well for a group.
Odysseus. Athena. Circe. Poseidon. Pick your mythology.
5. Spider-Man
Some Halloween costumes simply refuse to disappear.
Spider-Man is one of them — except this year there’s an actual reason for the resurgence. The character returned to the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, putting the suit right back in the middle of 2026 pop culture.
Retailers are already prominently stocking new Spider-Man looks in their 2026 Halloween selections.
You could obviously buy the full suit, but Halloween is also considerably more entertaining when people start improvising.
Peter Parker mid-transformation is arguably better anyway.
6. The Toy Story 5 Gang
Woody and Buzz never really went anywhere, but Toy Story 5 brought the entire gang back this summer.
The fifth movie arrived in June with Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the toys returning alongside new characters, giving an already classic group costume another year in the spotlight.
Jessie may be the strongest option if you want something recognizable without feeling like you’re wearing a mascot costume.
Cowboy hat. White shirt. Denim. Braid.
Done.
For a larger group, though, you already know what to do.
7. KPop Demon Hunters
This one is almost unavoidable.
Rumi, Mira and Zoey were already huge Halloween inspiration, and the obsession has carried straight into 2026. Netflix and Spirit Halloween are even releasing officially licensed adult and kids HUNTR/X costumes this year.
It also happens to be one of the easiest group costumes on this list.
Go full HUNTR/X with three friends, pick one character and commit to the hair, or borrow the movie’s mix of colourful stagewear, boots and K-pop glam rather than recreating a costume exactly.
Best for: Groups, best friends and anyone who wants people to recognize the costume immediately.
8. Ghostface — Again
We know.
Ghostface for Halloween is not exactly groundbreaking.
But Ghostface has reached that rare point where the costume operates almost like a little black dress: it comes back every year and somehow keeps finding a new variation.
Current 2026 costume collections include everything from traditional Ghostface to aged and pink versions of the character.
That means the better approach this year may be to stop trying to make it screen-accurate.
Pink Ghostface. Glam Ghostface. Office Ghostface. Ghostface in a fur coat.
The mask does most of the work.
9. Wednesday Addams
Wednesday is another costume that has graduated from “trend” to Halloween permanent resident.
The braids, white collar and all-black wardrobe make it instantly recognizable, while the broader dark-academia look means you can also make it feel more like an outfit than a costume.
Current 2026 trend forecasting continues to point to Wednesday-inspired black braids and dark styling as a Halloween staple.
There’s also something appealing about a costume that requires almost no explanation and very little last-minute panic.
Add Thing if you want bonus points.
10. A Very Glamorous Vampire
Not everything needs to come from a movie.
The vampire is having another moment, but the 2026 version feels considerably more glamorous than plastic fangs and fake blood running down your chin.
Think velvet, lace, smoky eyes, deep red lips, dramatic jewellery and just enough gothic romance to suggest you may have been alive since 1847.
It also lines up nicely with one of fall’s broader fashion moods: deep burgundy, black cherry, lace and darker romantic textures are already everywhere this season.
In other words, half the costume may already be sitting in your closet.

KPop Demon Hunters has staying power. Practical Magic 2 arrived at essentially the perfect moment. The Devil Wears Prada 2 gave fashion people an excuse to turn Halloween into an outfit. And characters from some of 2026’s biggest movies are already making their way into costume collections.
Our advice?
Pick the one you’ll actually have fun wearing.
Because spending October 31 adjusting a costume you hate all night is scarier than anything on this list.
