Buddy the Unicorn, the unsettling mascot from Casper Kelly’s horror-comedy Buddy, has landed at No. 1 on Google’s Frightgeist list of trending Halloween costumes in the United States.
In September, searches for “buddy unicorn costume” even surpassed “kids unicorn costume” for the first time.
Apparently, everyone wants to dress like a homicidal children’s television mascot this Halloween.
Who Is Buddy the Unicorn?
Buddy comes from the 2026 horror movie Buddy, directed by Casper Kelly, the filmmaker behind the bizarre viral short Too Many Cooks.
The film follows a seemingly wholesome children’s television show called It’s Buddy!, where a giant orange unicorn teaches children important life lessons through singing, dancing and games.
There’s just one problem. Buddy doesn’t particularly appreciate anyone refusing to participate.
Voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, the character combines the nostalgic look of a ’90s children’s television mascot with something considerably more disturbing.
Think Barney, but with serious anger issues.
How to Make a Buddy the Unicorn Costume for Halloween 2026
The good news? You don’t necessarily need a professionally made mascot suit to pull off a recognizable Buddy costume.
His bright orange fur and oversized purple heart make him surprisingly easy to identify, even with a DIY interpretation.
