Mike Flanagan’s new Prime Video adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie delivers the infamous prom scene, a mysterious new character and an ending that changes everything.
Warning: Major spoilers for Carrie (2026) ahead.

If you thought you knew how Carrie was going to end, Mike Flanagan had other plans.
And if there’s one thing we know about Mike Flanagan, it’s that he knows what he’s doing. From The Haunting of Hill House to Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep, he’s proven time and again that great horror is about more than scares. It’s about the people, the trauma and the emotions behind them. With Carrie, he understands exactly what made Stephen King’s original story so powerful, while finding a way to make it feel fresh, unsettling and genuinely unexpected.
The filmmaker’s eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel premiered on Prime Video on October 7, 2026, bringing Carrie White’s tragic story into the age of social media, cyberbullying and viral humiliation.
Starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie and Samantha Sloyan as her mother, Margaret White, the series revisits the familiar story of a bullied teenager discovering her telekinetic abilities.
But while the infamous prom night disaster still takes place, the finale introduces some major changes to King’s original story.
Most importantly, Carrie doesn’t die.
Here’s everything that happens in the Carrie finale, including the truth about Emaline and what the ending could mean for the future.
What Happens at the End of Carrie (2026)?

As expected, everything comes crashing down on prom night.
After enduring relentless bullying throughout the series, Carrie finally experiences a moment of happiness when she attends prom with Tommy Ross (Joel Oulette).
The two are crowned prom queen and king, but the celebration quickly turns into a nightmare.
Chris Hargensen (Alison Thornton) and Billy Nolan (Arthur Conti) execute their cruel prank, dumping pig’s blood over Carrie in front of her classmates.
Humiliated once again, Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers.
The gymnasium descends into chaos as electrical equipment malfunctions, fires spread and students desperately try to escape.
Tommy is killed during the destruction, while Principal Grayle, played by Matthew Lillard, also becomes one of the victims.
But the biggest twist isn’t the violence itself. It’s the revelation that Carrie isn’t entirely acting alone.
Who Is Emaline in Carrie?

One of the most significant additions to Flanagan’s adaptation is Emaline, played by Thalia Dudek. Throughout the series, Emaline appears to be a friend who understands Carrie and encourages her to explore her unusual abilities.
However, the finale reveals that Emaline is actually a powerful psychic capable of astral projection.
In other words, the version of Emaline that Carrie has been interacting with isn’t physically present.
She’s projecting her consciousness from somewhere else.
Emaline was originally sent to observe Carrie by a mysterious group of women who also possess psychic abilities.
During the prom disaster, Carrie allows Emaline to temporarily take control of her body, helping explain the extraordinary level of destruction that follows.
It’s a major departure from previous adaptations, where Carrie’s devastating revenge is driven entirely by her own powers and emotions.
However, Carrie isn’t completely absolved of responsibility.
She personally kills Chris after confronting her and Billy following the massacre, making it clear that she is still capable of choosing revenge.
Does Carrie Die at the End?
No. In one of the biggest changes to Stephen King’s original story, Carrie White survives the finale.
After the destruction at prom, Carrie returns home to her mother, Margaret.
At first, Margaret appears sympathetic toward her daughter. But that moment of comfort doesn’t last.
Consumed by fear and her religious beliefs, Margaret attempts to kill Carrie.
A violent confrontation follows, with Carrie using her telekinetic abilities to bring their house crashing down.
In the original novel and the famous 1976 film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek, Carrie ultimately dies.
This time, she survives.
Emaline arrives in person and rescues her from the aftermath, and the two leave Chamberlain together.
For the first time, Carrie White’s story ends with the possibility of a future rather than certain death.
What Happens to Carrie’s Mother?
Margaret White also survives the initial destruction of the family home.
The finale reveals that Margaret possesses telekinetic abilities of her own, suggesting Carrie’s powers may have been inherited from her mother.
However, Margaret’s survival is short-lived.
After speaking with the mysterious women investigating the prom disaster, Margaret is killed to prevent her from revealing what she knows.
It’s another significant change to the story, reinforcing the idea that Carrie and her mother are connected to something much larger than their troubled relationship.
Who Are the Mysterious Women?
The finale reveals that a secret society of women with psychic abilities has been observing Carrie.
Led by Adelaide, played by Kate Siegel, the organization has been monitoring powerful individuals and attempting to control what the public knows about them.
In a clever twist, the documentary-style interviews used throughout the series are revealed to be part of the group’s efforts to investigate the disaster and manipulate survivors’ memories.
Emaline was originally working with this organization before ultimately choosing to leave with Carrie.
The group’s existence also introduces the possibility that Carrie is far from the only person with extraordinary abilities.
Is Carrie Connected to Stephen King’s Dark Tower Universe?

Possibly, although a direct connection hasn’t been officially established.
The finale contains references and ideas that will feel familiar to longtime Stephen King readers, particularly the existence of powerful psychics and organizations interested in controlling them.
The series also introduces language associated with the psychic abilities explored in The Shining and Doctor Sleep.
Some viewers have identified potential Easter eggs connected to The Dark Tower, including imagery and references associated with King’s larger fictional universe.
Flanagan is also developing an adaptation of The Dark Tower, making the similarities especially interesting.
However, these details shouldn’t necessarily be taken as confirmation that the two television projects will share a connected storyline.
For now, they’re intriguing possibilities rather than established facts.
Will There Be a Carrie Season 2?
As of October 8, 2026, Prime Video has not officially announced a second season of Carrie.
However, Flanagan has discussed the possibility of expanding the story beyond its initial eight episodes, including a potential three-season arc.
The finale certainly leaves room for more.
Carrie and Emaline are alive, the mysterious psychic organization remains active, and there are still plenty of unanswered questions about the extent of Carrie’s abilities.
Whether or not the series continues, the ending marks a dramatic change for one of horror’s most recognizable characters.
For decades, Carrie White’s story has been defined by isolation, cruelty and an inescapable tragedy.
This time, she gets the one thing previous versions rarely allowed her.
A chance to live.
