Easy Starbucks swaps for a PSL that’s less sweet, but still tastes like fall.
If you’re looking for a healthier pumpkin spice latte, you don’t have to completely reinvent the drink.
The Pumpkin Spice Latte is supposed to be a treat. It’s sweet, creamy, topped with whipped cream and tastes unmistakably like fall. The point here isn’t to turn it into black coffee or suggest there’s anything wrong with ordering the original.
But if you like the PSL and find the standard recipe sweeter than you need, Starbucks makes it surprisingly easy to adjust.
And some of the simplest changes start with knowing what’s actually in the drink.
What Comes in a Regular Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte?
The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte starts with espresso and milk, adds pumpkin spice sauce made with real pumpkin, and finishes with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice.
A standard Grande hot PSL has approximately:
390 calories
50 grams of sugar
14 grams of fat
14 grams of protein
150 mg of caffeine
The Grande Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte comes in slightly lower at 370 calories and 45 grams of sugar.
Those numbers are based on Starbucks’ standard recipes. Once you start changing the milk, number of pumps, whipped cream or other ingredients, the nutrition changes too.
Then there’s the part of the recipe that’s especially easy to customize: the pumpkin sauce.
The standard PSL build generally increases the number of pumps as the drink gets bigger:
Tall: 3 pumps
Grande: 4 pumps
Venti hot: 5 pumps
Venti iced: 6 pumps
Yes, six pumps in a standard Venti iced PSL.
If you like pumpkin spice but don’t need your drink quite that sweet, this is probably the first place to start.
Start With Fewer Pumps of Pumpkin Sauce
The easiest way to order a healthier pumpkin spice latte is also the most obvious: keep the pumpkin sauce, just ask for less of it.
You don’t need to take it from six pumps to zero.
Try:
Tall: 2 pumps instead of 3
Grande: 2 pumps instead of 4
Venti hot: 3 pumps instead of 5
Venti iced: 3 pumps instead of 6
Cutting the pumps roughly in half reduces the amount of sweetened pumpkin sauce going into the drink while still giving you the flavour you ordered it for.
And if half sounds like too much of a change, start by dropping just one pump.
Keep the Pumpkin Spice Topping
One thing we wouldn’t remove? The pumpkin spice topping.
The topping is where you get those cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and clove notes without adding another round of pumpkin sauce.
So if you’re cutting down the number of pumps, keeping the spice on top helps the drink still feel very much like a PSL.
You can even ask for a little extra pumpkin spice topping if you prefer a stronger spice flavour.
Go Light on the Whipped Cream
If you don’t really care about whipped cream, leave it off. If it’s part of the experience for you, ask for light whip. The goal isn’t to systematically remove every fun thing from your coffee; you’re just simply deciding which parts of the drink you actually care about.
If that little bit of whipped cream on top makes the whole thing better, keep it.
You Don’t Automatically Need to Change the Milk
This is where a lot of “healthy Starbucks order” advice loses us.
There isn’t one milk that automatically makes your latte healthy.
Different milk options come with different amounts of calories, sugar, fat and protein. Dairy milk, for example, also contributes protein to the standard PSL. Nondairy options can make sense depending on your dietary needs and what you actually like.
So rather than picking a milk purely because TikTok declared it the healthiest, order the one you prefer.
If reducing sweetness is your main goal, adjusting the pumpkin sauce may make a more noticeable difference to the drink anyway.

Exactly How We’d Order a Healthier PSL
If you just want something you can screenshot before getting to the drive-thru, these are the two orders we’d start with.
For a Grande
Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte
2 pumps pumpkin sauce instead of 4
Light whipped cream
Milk of your choice
Keep the pumpkin spice topping
For a Venti Iced
Venti Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte
3 pumps pumpkin sauce instead of 6
Light or no whipped cream
Milk of your choice
Keep the pumpkin spice topping
The Venti iced customization is particularly easy because you’re taking the pumpkin sauce from six pumps to three without losing it completely.
It should still taste like pumpkin spice. Just less sweet.
Or Just Get a Smaller PSL
There’s also an extremely underrated Starbucks customization: Order a smaller cup.
A lighter swap doesn’t necessarily have to mean creating the lowest-calorie drink possible. It can also mean choosing a portion that works for you and enjoying the original.
The PSL Is Still a Treat — And That’s Fine
Starbucks brought the Pumpkin Spice Latte back on August 25 as part of its 2026 fall menu, alongside several other pumpkin drinks.
If you want to try one of these customizations, you can order a PSL in-store, through the Starbucks app, or online and customize the drink before checkout. Starbucks also offers delivery in participating areas.
Whether you cut the pumpkin sauce in half, go light on the whip or order the standard version exactly as it comes, the PSL is officially back for the season.
